ABOUT THIS SEMINAR

The February 5, 2026 Continuing Professional Development Seminar, titled “Mental Health, Workplace and Professional Ethics” is presented by the Immigration Practitioner Centre (IPC) at Ashton College and delivered through AshtonLive.

This seminar provides guidance and insight into addressing mental health challenges in the workplace, supporting Immigration Practitioners in managing stress, difficult clients, and maintaining professionalism and ethical standards in their practice.

The seminar features two experienced presenters who offer practical advice and professional perspectives:

  • Fred Y-F Li, RCIC-IRB – Mental Health Issues: Dealing with Mental Health, Stress, and Difficult Clients
  • Johann Contreras, Lawyer – Workplace and Professional Ethics

Each presentation is followed by a Question-and-Answer section.

In addition, the presenters will lead a discussion on proposed regulations concerning Authorized and Unauthorized Representatives, Proposed Penalties, and the Compensation Fund.

Pending approval for 2.0 CPD Hours by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants and the Law Society of BC.

MEET THE SPEAKERS

Fred Y-F Li 

RCIC-IRB

Mental Health

Fred Li is a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) and Managing Director & Partner at an immigration practice firm in Richmond, BC. Fred obtained a Certificate from the UBC Immigration Practitioner Program in 2011 and became a practicing member of the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC).

Fred Li has extensive experience specializing in Hearings & Appeals before the Immigration & Refugee Board of Canada, Immigration Investigations that are before the Canada Border Services Agency, Humanitarian & Compassionate applications, Family Class applications, various Skilled Worker applications that are applied through Express Entry or Provincial Nominee programs, Work & Study permit applications, Criminal Rehabilitation, Medical Inadmissibility, Citizenship applications, various Business Immigration applications and preparing Judicial Review applications before the Federal Court of Canada.

Fred is an avid volunteer and volunteers for non-profit organizations such as the Immigrant Services Society of BC and Access Pro Bono. 

Johann Contreras

Workplace and Professional Ethics

After several years of practicing immigration law in downtown Vancouver, Johann moved his law practice home to Greater Vancouver’s City of Port Moody where he founded Contreras Law in 2017.

​After earning his first degree, Johann worked as a self-employed University Student Tutor, helping students achieve their academic goals before starting law school.

Since becoming a lawyer, Johann has assisted clients with IRCC, IRB, and Federal Court of Canada matters.

As an experienced immigration lawyer, other immigration lawyers, and immigration consultants, often reach out to Johann for advice and for help with their files, and he has presented different immigration topics to various groups. 

His ability to explain complex concepts in simple, easy-to-understand terms is often cited as one of his strengths by his colleagues.
